Setting Bold Goals

HQSI is striving to become the first state to exceed National Quality Improvement Goals. By working together, we think we can make this happen by moving quickly and decisively. The federal government has issued a series of bold goals for the nation’s healthcare community in its National Quality Strategy– reduce hospital readmissions by 20% by 2014, reduce healthcare acquired conditions by 40% by 2013, and reduce adverse drug events in 265,000 lives each year, to name just a few.

HQSI, the federally-designated quality improvement organization, is partnering with the federal government to support local achievement of these bold goals under our current Tenth Scope of Work for the Medicare Program contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which runs from August 1, 2011 through July 31, 2014.

HQSI is providing free quality improvement consulting services to New Jersey physicians and providers who are committed to making rapid, dramatic improvements in the following areas:


Integrating Care for Populations and Communities

  • Reduce avoidable acute care readmissions within 30 days by working within communities and across the healthcare continuum 

Reducing Adverse Drug Events

  • Integrate and expand clinical pharmacy services in outpatient clinics

Reducing Healthcare-associated Infections in Hospitals

  • Prevent/eliminate central line associated blood stream infection, catheter associated urinary tract infection, surgical site infection and clostridium dfficile infection 

Hospital Quality Reporting and Improvement

  • Improve hospital compare inpatient and outpatient measures

Reducing Healthcare Acquired Conditions in Long Term Care

  • Prevent/eliminate pressure ulcers and physical restraints

Improving Health for Populations and Communities in Physician Offices

  • Maximize federal and state incentive programs through the meaningful use of electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Expand the use of Medicare-covered preventive services (adult immunizations, mammography, colorectal cancer screening) 
  • Improve cardiac health

Improving Beneficiary and Family Centered Care

  • Ensure the care provided to Medicare patient is medically necessary, provided in the appropriate setting and of a quality that meets accepted professional standards of quality
  • Ensure Medicare patients and families are consistently satisfied with their overall experience of care
